Weather, when to go, What to do?

For Safari Riders, Wilpattu & Yala National park are the great place to start or end your wildlife watching experience in spotting and tracking leopard, elephant and others astonishing wildlife, as long as you avoid the very first week of January as you most of the year have a left over of the north-eastern monsoon.

“Jan” is always a great month to travel as the sun rise amazingly well, the rainfall are pretty low & the temperature around the West & Southern is around 30 °C along the southern and western coast, alongside lots of sunshine. Rainfall at this time is pretty minimal, so plenty of beach relaxation is in order.

 

Top spots for city and beach in the south west for January include Galle, Colombo, Tangalle, Bentota and Weligama. These are great places to start or end your wildlife safari, and the wildlife parks are also excellent at this time.

DURUTHU PERAHERA
Yearly procession always happen during the January Fullmoon at the Kelaniya Rajah Maha Viharaya which is the most sacred temple in the western province since Buddha’s sojourn during his 3rd visit, for 3 consecutive days (28, 29 & 30). It’s the country’s most elaborate and grandest low country event which commemorates the religious significance of Buddha’s visit, in belnding cultural traditions of dancers, singers, drummers and colourful parades, which will amazed you all nights.

Kelaniya Rajah Maha Viharaya is only located about 10 kms away from Colombo

ENCOUNTER THE WILDLIFE?

Time to trek in Hill Country as Horton Plains, Knuckle Range, Adam Peak & Tea Country are from January the beginning of absolutely stunning weather offering breathtaking sceneries with loads of wildlife & birds

 

Birders, Don't miss especially Mannar and Jaffna for spotting loads of migratory birds.

Wilpattu, Udawalawe remain at the peak of the year the best national park to ride, without forgotten than most of the others national parks are still running pretty great which promise you spectacular spotshot of wild numbers of animals.

 

Whale & Dolphin can be easily spotted downsouth around Mirissa as well as in the northwest around Kalpitiya.
