Due to its location in the middle-eastern part of the Island, far away from the tourism trail, it has remained almost entirely undeveloped with evergreen forest & savanna area where wildlife thrives in this environment. We will offer the only existing boat safaris in the whole Sri Lanka ( highly recommend), on which you can spot swimming elephants from island to island within the largest manmade lake in Sri Lanka…

The property If you want to experience the jungle in style, look no further than the Gal Oya Lodge who is an unique ecolodge spread across 20 acres of private forest, bringing you closer to nature by having our ten bungalows fully designed to feel a part of the landscape, seamlessly blending with the surrounding terrain.. Take your time enjoying this natural paradise. Our philosophy lies at the heart of the design – to bring you closer to nature and to protect the local environment. The concept lives in every detail, from the undisturbed lush forest of our mountain site to the natural materials – such as cajan, wood and illuk – used to create our bungalows. And, of course, we use appropriate technology and recycling to preserve precious natural resources such as water and energy. Accommodation Bungalow (1-3pax)) Each bungalow is nestled in the forest, specifically sited to minimize its impact on the land, and to frame the best possible views. We want you to enjoy a sense of space and comfort. Each bungalow is a generous 800 sq. ft. consisting of a private living room and bedroom with a built-in king sized bed. An adjoining airy bathroom, double sinks, and both indoor and outdoor showers complete the experience. To really draw nature into the space, we had to reimagine the traditional ideas of interior and exterior found in other luxury boutique hotels in Sri Lanka. Both bungalow bedrooms feature spectacular floor to ceiling glass windows and doors that open onto a private veranda. Whether you’re indoors relaxing or outside enjoying the scenery, nature is right there with you. To provide for families or those looking for a little more indulgence, we have created a secluded two-bedroom villa perched at the highest point of the Gal Oya Lodge site. Peaceful, remote and with breath-taking views, it is the perfect spot for those in search of a luxury escape. Cuisine Locally source delicacies are special highlight of Lodge life. Lovingly prepared, the days’ menu will include a choice of Sri Lankan and Western items, featuring home grown herbs and vegetables, and produce from neighbouring village farmers. Innovative, fresh and healthy, meals are served in the dining room. Be sure to try our delicious national favourites such as curries, sambol and roti. Join our Lodge chef in the kitchen for Sri Lankan cooking courses. Facilities & Services Our concept follows environmentally sound practices including recycling, energy conservation, growing our own produce and using sustainable materials whenever we can. We have recently installed a Wildlife training and research facility to work with local conservation organisations and to help protect wildlife. Day 1 (L-D) Upon around 1pm to the lodge, proceed to your check in then join us for your lunch. After your lunch, we will take back the road in the direction of one of the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka. After 45 min drive, reach the jetty of the reservoir where you will embark in a water boat for 2-3 hrs on a sunset boat cruise in one of the largest reservoir, only experience in Sri Lanka that allows you to spot wildlife from the water. It’s a unique way to immerse yourself in the animals’ habitats. With a little luck you could spot elephants swimming between islands or bathing at the lake’s edge. After this amazing boat experience get back to the lodge and enjoy the rest of the evening and a superbe dinner at the lodge. Day 2 (B-PNL-D) Early wake and after a quick coffee, at 6am join a resident naturalist for an early morning bird walk with its sunrise around the lodge, enjoying the abundant birdlife and beautiful surroundings. The walk offers a number of possible routes through the trees and around the nearby lake, to observe a wide range of bird species such as Kingfishers, Eagles, Kites and many aquatic birds. Please feel free to discuss your interests with your naturalist for a tailored trip to suit your preferences. Return at the lodge for breakfast (around 8:30-9am). Enjoy the rest of the morning to take a dip into the pool, chill in your chalet or walk around to spot some birds By 12:30am for an unique delicious picnic lunch in the National Park. Enjoy this lunch next to the river, waterfall or overlooking one of the park’s many breathtaking views. After this splendid time, we will continue this jeep ride for about 4hrs into the forgotten Nilgala section of Gal Oya National Park. Once protected by ancient royalty for the abundant medicinal plants and endemic birdlife, the park’s unique ecosystem is home to herds of elephants, wild boar, four species of deer, jackals, sloth bears, marsh mugger crocodiles and an array of rare exotic birds. Our more intrepid guests can couple the drive with a safari on foot. Hike through the park with our expert naturalists and see wildlife up close while exploring hidden corners of the park. You will be back at the lodge by the end of day, for you to be free and easy to enjoy yourself at the lodge Day 3 (B-L-D) An early morning start as by 5:30am we go back for a 4hrs sunrise jeep ride into the Gal Oya National Park for you get more opportunity to spot the morning wildlife (many birds) and get lucky to appreciate the sunrise. We will be back to your lodge for a late breakfast (9:30-10am). Take the rest of the morning to chill at the lodge and appreciate a lunch in this amazing surrounded. By 2pm, depart for a walk of Discovery with the Chief Veddha for about 1&1/2 hrs of one of the last remaining communities of the Veddha – the forest-dwelling, indigenous people of Sri Lanka. Invited by one of the village Chief to take you on a walk through the jungles of his ancestors. Discover and learn about local nature as he brings the forest alive, explaining his tribe’s use of medicinal plants, ancient hunting grounds and cave dwellings. It’s a fascinating insight into how the hunter-gatherers lived in the jungles of Gal Oya. Set out at 5:00pm and begin the 3-4hrs night safari with a drive to the Watawanna Lake. There you will visit some archaeological sites including ruins and an ancient water duct system. As it gets dark, drive back to the lodge with spotlights on, keeping a lookout for eyes shining back at you! Amongst other species, you can hope to see Jackals, Elephants, Nightjars, Wild Boars, Mouse Deers, Jungle Cats and Civets. Back to the lodge between 8-10pm for your dinner Day 4 (B) An early morning start as by 5:30am we go back into the Gal Oya National Park for 2-3 hrs on a sunrise boat cruise for birds & wildlife watching, pure paradise especially at those hours of the day to spot multiple birds and with a little luck you could spot elephants swimming between islands or bathing at the lake’s edge We will be back to your lodge for a late breakfast (10:30am), then proceed your check out and head for your next destination.
